River Fleet
You do rember one of rooms at America Square Conference Centre is called The Fleet !
The River Fleet is the largest of London’s subterranean rivers. It rises from two springs on Hampstead Heath and direcetd into two reservoirs constructed in the 18th centuary, highgate and hampstead ponds. From the ponds the water flows underground for 4 miles to join the River Thames.
In the 1970s the river gave its name to a planned Underground Tube Line, which was to run alongside the route of the former river, but prior to opening in honour of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977, the name changed from the Fleet Line to Jubilee Line and the route changed.
So you now know the history behind two of our names rooms The Fleet and Walbrook at One America Square! If you would like to come along and see the origional wall please contract me.
Next week Lina, will be doing the posts, which will be fun and funky, so don’t forget to log on. I will be back soon with more histories !
